PLAY! Urbanization, Child Health, Inclusive Design, and the Risk/Reward Relationship, Ken Dobyns
A multifunctional approach to designing intriguing outdoor play environments that facilitate high use and are relevant for all generations and abilities will be presented through examples, concepts, and research. Children's developmental stages, health and psychological motivation will set the stage, as well as the relationship between risk and reward.

Placemaking: Historical Inspiration and Contemporary Expression in Urban Design, Tom Norquist
Be inspired by communities that have formed unique partnerships and engaged citizens to develop award winning outdoor play environments that apply interpretive themes for learning. This session will highlight methods to discover the power of engaging a variety of stakeholders in design workshops, community builds, and funding models to design and program innovative play spaces specifically designed to link to the local environment, social or natural history, or community culture. Projects of distinction across the nation will be highlighted that infuse community culture and/or history, and design best practices will be offered to create unique play destinations that promote creativity, learning, physical activity, and inclusion.

Children learn by doing. Experience and play in the outdoors are vital to children and their well-being, as well as health and development across all areas. This course will teach you how to design for experiential learners, and how the outdoors provide an exciting, hands-on, deeply interesting space in which children learn from the natural world, one another and from their play.

He shares the secrets of planning, design, funding and public involvement of these projects while leading his group of virtual riders to experience the results of this city's high performance team.
