Course Description
There has been much excitement among the planning community about implementing Complete Streets in our cities and towns. While reestablishing streets for multimodal mobility and access is an important goal, the conversation should not end there. As a public resource that covers about 30% of the land area in the average American city, streets can promote healthy living, social interaction, commerce and more.

Based on a two-year research effort funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, this session will explore the additional functions and forms of multifunctional and well-designed streets, and the value of streets to a city’s economy, environment and residents. re:Streets pushes beyond the current standards to explore the future of streets and what America's roadways would be like if they were designed for living, instead of just driving.

The re:Streets research effort has resulted in a fundamental rethinking of America’s streets based on the most recent, cutting edge research on street design. This has included best practices research, design charrettes held in cities across the country and a three-day charrette attended by over 100 multidisciplinary professionals. Based on these findings, a database of best practices and case studies has been fine tuned. re:Streets describes the full spectrum of street forms and functions, including multimodal mobility, social gathering, commerce, events and programs, play and recreation, urban agriculture, wayfinding, green infrastructure and image and identity. Information from the re:Streets project is available to anyone who wants to design a better street for their community at www.restreets.org. A free comprehensive design manual for creating streets that are truly for everyone will be published as an eBook at a future date.

In this interactive 1 ½ hour presentation, the leaders of the re:Streets initiative will provide an overview of the latest research on the nine different functions of street design, and present innovative case studies of relevant projects. The session will conclude with questions and answers and a summary.
